A typical full case covers the ten front teeth in the upper jaw, which comes to 75 000 SEK in composite. Publishing prices is unusual in Swedish cosmetic dentistry, and the reason we do it is simple: you should be able to work out what a treatment costs before you book, not after.

Why we don't grind down your teeth

Porcelain veneers are made in a laboratory and need room to sit, so the tooth has to be prepared. Enamel does not grow back. Once it is removed, that tooth depends on always having something on it — for the rest of your life.

Composite is shaped directly on the tooth, in your mouth, with you in the chair. Nothing is removed. If you want the edge slightly straighter or the tooth half a millimetre longer, we do it there and then while you look in the mirror. That control is the reason composite bonding is our first recommendation for most patients, not a budget alternative to something better.

It also means the decision is reversible in a way porcelain is not. If you ever want to change to porcelain later, you still have your whole tooth to work with. The other direction does not give you your enamel back.

The material and the method

The reputation composite has for going dull and yellow comes from the coarse hybrid composites of the 1990s and 2000s. Those materials have been replaced, but the reputation has not caught up.

We work with Renamel Microfill from Cosmedent, a microfilled composite developed specifically for aesthetic front-tooth work. Its very fine filler particles are what allow the surface to be polished to an enamel-like gloss and hold it. In a clinical evaluation of 74 direct composite veneers in function for up to ten years, microfilled composite performed significantly better than standard universal composite on surface gloss, surface staining and marginal adaptation — and every total failure in that study occurred in the universal composite group.

A natural tooth is not one flat colour. It has dentine carrying the colour, an enamel layer that lets light through, and small individual details: brighter areas along the edge, a little translucency at the tip, depth that changes with the light. We build the tooth in layers that recreate exactly that — internal characterisation, translucency and highlights. That is the whole difference between a result that looks made and one that does not.

Oscar is trained in the Marshall Hanson Method. Dr Marshall Hanson is a Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry — the 69th dentist in the world to hold that accreditation — and the method rests on three principles: beautiful, natural, non-invasive. For edge bonding we use Estelite Asteria from Tokuyama; Oscar is a Key Opinion Leader for Tokuyama and has run training courses in edge bonding with them.

How long it lasts

Ten years, colour stable throughout that period. If something chips it can usually be repaired directly in the chair rather than remade from scratch — another practical advantage over porcelain, where a chip generally means a new veneer.

What the treatment involves

The first appointment is an examination and a conversation about what you want changed. You leave with a written quote. The treatment itself takes one or two visits and is finished within 48 hours. Anaesthetic is usually not needed, because nothing is being drilled. Afterwards we polish and check the bite, and you can eat and drink normally the same day.

If your teeth are crooked as well as worn, the order matters: straighten first, shape second. We are a Platinum Invisalign provider, and treatment runs 35 000, 45 000 or 55 000 SEK depending on how far the teeth need to move. Building up a tooth before it has been moved simply puts the build-up in the wrong place.

Does the Swedish dental subsidy cover this?

Not for purely cosmetic work. The Swedish state dental support covers treatment that is necessary for medical reasons — fillings, root canals, extractions, implants — and if you are registered as living in Sweden it applies automatically at the clinic, with no paperwork on your side. Cosmetic bonding and whitening fall outside it. Where a damaged tooth is being restored, part of the work may qualify, and we tell you which part when we write the quote.

Payment can be spread interest-free up to 60 000 SEK through Medical Finance and Resursbank, and up to 100 000 SEK over three years through Svea Finans.

Common questions

How much does composite bonding cost in Stockholm?

7 500 SEK per tooth for composite veneers and 4 050 SEK per tooth for edge bonding at our clinic. A full case of ten upper front teeth comes to 75 000 SEK. Porcelain veneers cost 12 000 SEK per tooth.

Do you speak English?

Yes. Consultations, treatment and written quotes are all available in English.

Do you need to drill or file my teeth?

No. Composite bonding is built directly onto the tooth with no enamel removed. Porcelain veneers do require the tooth to be prepared, which is why we suggest composite first.

How many visits does it take?

One or two, finished within 48 hours. Porcelain veneers take several appointments with temporaries in between.

Will composite stain over time?

Not the composite we use. Renamel Microfill is made for aesthetic front-tooth work and holds its polish and colour. The staining reputation comes from older, coarser materials.

Does the treatment hurt?

Anaesthetic is usually not needed, because no drilling is involved. You may feel pressure while the material is shaped, but not pain.

Can I mix composite and porcelain veneers?

We advise against it. The two materials have different translucency and lustre and are very difficult to colour match, so the eye reads the difference even when it cannot name it. Choose one material for the whole front.

Is composite bonding covered by Swedish dental insurance?

Not when it is done for cosmetic reasons. The state subsidy covers treatment necessary for medical reasons. Where a damaged tooth is being restored, part of the work may qualify, and we specify that in the written quote.

Måste man slipa tänderna för fasader?

Nej. Composite resin veneers byggs direkt på tanden utan att frisk emalj slipas bort. Här är vad slipning faktiskt innebär, när den är motiverad och varför vi börjar i den bevarande änden.
